Front wheel brakes

On cars with engines of 1.1 and 1.3 liters, the discs are solid, with a volume of 1.6 liters, the discs are ventilated. Brake brand Ate, type - FN 54.
Rear wheel brakes
Rear wheel brakes (pic. 6.2) drum, with automatic adjustment of the gap between the shoes and drums.

Brake brand Girling. The nominal inner diameter of the drums is 180 mm. The diameter of the piston of the wheel cylinder is 19.05 mm. The lining brand is Minex M 79/1. Pad width 30 mm, front pad thickness 4.35 mm, back pad 2.80 mm, minimum allowable thickness 1.0 mm. On cars «Escort XR3i» And «Orion 1,6 injection» installed brake drums with an inner diameter of 8 (203 mm), as well as reinforced brake pads 38 mm wide with glued pads. Vacuum booster, brake calipers and ventilated front wheel discs are the same as on «Escort XR3» Since February 1983 (manufacturing index «DK») model cars «Escort», including «XR3i», were equipped with working cylinders of the rear brakes with a piston diameter of 17.78 mm instead of 19.05 mm. For cargo-passenger version «Escort» working cylinders with a piston diameter of 22.2 mm were still installed. In addition, starting from this date, the old pattern of the automatic gap adjustment lever was gradually replaced by a new one (pic. 6.3).

In case of replacement of the wheel cylinder on one side, install the same one on the other side Marking of the rear wheel brake cylinders: «T» - diameter 22.2 mm; «L» - 19.05 mm, «H» - 17.78 mm.
Vacuum booster
Piston diameter 228 mm.
Master cylinder
The master cylinder has two 22.0 mm diameter pistons in series. The piston stroke is 35.0 mm.
Pressure regulator
The pressure regulator regulates the pressure in the hydraulic drive of the rear wheel brakes, regardless of the load. The regulator is not repairable and in the event of a malfunction it is replaced entirely. From December 1982 to mass-produced cars «Escort» a new pressure regulator was gradually installed with an outlet of 12.0 mm instead of 10.0 mm. If installing a new regulator, install fittings of the appropriate diameter.
Parking brake system
The mechanical parking brake system acts on the rear wheel brakes. The parking brake is adjusted by adjusting the free travel of the plungers, which should be within 1.0-2.5 mm. Since the end of 1982 for cars «Escort» And «Orion» a new parking brake cable is installed, consisting of one piece. The new cable is interchangeable with the old two-piece cable.
