The steering column and shaft are safety, the damper is installed in the upper part of the shaft. The steering shaft consists of two parts connected by a cardan joint. The drive gear is helical. The steering drive consists of the right and left steering rods connected by ball joints to the steering knuckles.

Steering gear ratio 19.64. The smallest turning radius is 10.54 m. The position of the rail stop is regulated by steel washers 0.127 thick; 0.19; 0.25; 0.38 and 0.50 mm. The protrusion of washers and stop gaskets is within 0.015–0.150 mm. The moment of rotation of the drive gear is 0.031-0.130 kgf·m. Preload of ball joints in the range of 0.36-0.58 kgf·m 95 cm3 of semi-fluid lubricant according to Ford SAM-1 C-9106-A specification is put into the steering gear housing.

Since May 1983, at first on cars «Escort», and then on «Orion» new steering was installed «Escort RS 1600i» the steering wheel has four spokes and a leather cover. The differences of the new rail are as follows: the position of the stop is regulated by a stopper, which is pivoted after adjustment, i.e. without the use of shims; the position of the drive gear and bearing is also regulated by a plug, which is skewed after adjustment; protective covers are fastened with only one clamp on the side of the steering gear case, and on the side of the steering rods they are held by annular grooves on the steering rods.
