Fuel pump

AC Deico fuel pump, diaphragm type, driven by a camshaft eccentric through a pushrod (lever for GLA engines). The pump body is non-separable, only its cover is removed for cleaning or replacing the filter or cover gasket. Fuel supply pressure 0.22-0.25 kgf/cm² for GLA model engine, 0.22-0.35 kgf/cm² for engines of other models. installed on Ford «Escort». 0.24-0.38 kgf/cm² for engines fitted to Ford «Orion».

Fuel pressure test

The fuel supply pressure is not adjustable and must not exceed the upper limit specified for each engine model. Start the engine and let it idle for a while to fill the carburetor float chamber. Stop engine. Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the carburetor, being careful not to get gasoline on the hot engine. Connect a control pressure gauge to the fuel hose, start the engine and measure the fuel supply pressure at idle and with a short increase in speed. Stop the engine, disconnect the pressure gauge and connect the fuel supply hose to the carburetor. If the fuel pump is faulty, it must be replaced.

Removal and installation

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Remove hoses from fuel pump. Loosen the two mounting nuts and remove the fuel pump. Loosen cover screw 7 (pic. 2.74) pump and remove it; clean the inner cavity and strainer 5.



Install a new or in good condition cover gasket, filter and cover, being careful to fit. so that the cover fits into the annular groove in the pump housing. Clean mating surfaces of pump and cylinder block. install a new gasket and tighten the fuel pump mounting nuts. Connect the fuel supply and injection hoses and tighten them with screw clamps. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
