Features of starting the engine

Four-stroke, four-cylinder engines. liquid-cooled petrol, carburetor (models LRA and L7 with fuel injection system «K-Jetronic»). liquid-cooled, overhead camshaft (GLA side mounted model) They are installed in the front part of the body in the engine compartment across the axis of the vehicle. Together with the clutch, gearbox and final drive, they form a power unit.

Starting a cold engine equipped with a carburetor «ford» (with manual starter)

ATTENTION: Do not warm up the engine at high speeds or with the accelerator pedal pressed all the way down.

Place the shift lever in neutral and, if necessary, apply the parking brake. Pull out the choke control knob located on the right side of the steering column under the dashboard to failure.

NOTE: Model Engine Carburetor «XR3» is equipped with an automatic starter, and the above operation is not performed for it.

Switch on the starter by turning the ignition key to position III. If the engine does not start after 10 seconds of starter operation, return the key to position I. wait a few seconds and repeat the operation Do not press the accelerator pedal!

If after two attempts the engine does not start, perform the engine start operation according to the instructions in par. «start-drenched» engine»

After starting the engine, release the ignition key and, slowly removing the choke control knob, set the engine to normal idling. After the engine warms up, remove the choke control knob to the stop.

WARNING: Warming up the engine in a closed room is life-threatening - exhaust fumes are toxic.

Starting a cold XR3 engine equipped with a carburetor «weber» (with automatic starter)

1. It is not recommended to press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine.
2. After starting the engine, it is allowed, by slightly pressing the accelerator pedal, to maintain an increased engine speed until the engine warms up and enters normal idle mode.

Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to position II. Wait 30 seconds and check the engine temperature using the temperature gauge. (If the engine is warm, start it according to the instructions in par. «Hot engine start».) Turn the ignition key to position III

If the engine does not start after 10 seconds of starter operation, return the key to position I. wait a few seconds and repeat the operation.

If the engine still does not start within 10 seconds, perform the engine start operation according to the instructions in par. «Start «flooded» engine».

After starting the engine, release the ignition key and it will automatically return to position II.

Starting a hot engine with any type of carburetor

Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to position II. Wait 30 seconds and check the temperature of the engine using the indicator in the instrument cluster.

Slowly depress the accelerator pedal to half its travel and hold it in this position.

Turn on the starter and rotate the crankshaft until the engine starts. If the engine starts immediately, release the accelerator pedal and the ignition key.

If, after three attempts, the engine does not start, perform the starting operation described in par. «Starting a cold engine».

Start «flooded» engine with any type of carburetor

If several previous attempts to start the engine were unsuccessful, then the engine, apparently, «flooded». In this case, you should:

• sink the handle of the manual drive for controlling the air damper of the starting device to the stop (for manual carburetors);
• slowly press the accelerator pedal to the stop;
• while holding the accelerator pedal depressed, turn on the starter;
• as soon as the engine starts, slowly release the pedal as the engine speed increases.

Starting the engine with an additional battery

• Turn off the ignition (set the ignition key to position I).
• Connect wire output «+» auxiliary battery with output «+» main battery. Connect wire output «-» auxiliary battery with output «-» main battery.
• Start the engine and achieve its stable operation at minimum speed.
• Disconnect the wire from the output «-» main battery and then from the output «-» auxiliary battery.
• Disconnect the wire from the output «+» main battery and then from the output «+» auxiliary battery.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to the transistorized voltage regulator, do not disconnect the auxiliary battery while the engine is running at fast idle.

Starting the engine by towing

• Set the ignition key to position «II».
• Engage third gear.
• Pull out the manual choke control knob or depress the accelerator pedal to half of its travel.
• Disengage the clutch and begin pushing or towing the vehicle.
• Release the clutch and start the engine.

Valve rocker clearance adjustment

Adjustment of the working gap of the rocker arms on a new engine is carried out after the first 2,500 km of run and then every 10,000 km of run.
