Elements of fastening of the steering mechanism

1 - fastening bracket; 2 - rubber bushing; 3 – mechanism body

Withdrawal

1. Set wheels to drive straight.

2. Raise the front of the car and place on stands.

3. In the engine compartment, unscrew the coupling bolt of the connecting flange of the steering shaft with the drive gear.

4. Remove the cotter pins securing the nuts securing the ball joints (2) tie rod ends, unscrew the nuts and using a puller (1) remove steering knuckle from steering knuckle (3).

5. Loosen the steering gear mounting bolts.

6. Disconnect the steering gear from the steering shaft, to do this, lower it down, and then remove it completely from the side of the front fender of the car.

Disassembly

1. Remove the tips from the steering mechanism.

2. Unscrew the steering tips from the steering rods, accurately counting the number of turns of the steering tips.

3. Remove the clamps on both sides of the protective cover and pull the cover off the rack and steering rod.

4. Remove grease from the steering mechanism by moving the rack from one extreme position to another.

5. Drill with a drill, with a diameter of 4.9 mm, to a depth of not more than 9.5 mm, the pins (1) fixation of ball joints.

6. Unscrew the hinge housings, retaining rings and remove them with steering rods and thrust bearings under the ball bearings.

7. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the rack stop cover, washers, gasket, spring and stop.

8. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the drive gear bearing cover, gasket and sealing ring.

9. Remove drive gear with bearing.

10. Remove rack from steering box.

11. When replacing drive gear bearings, it must be remembered that the upper bearing is replaced only with the gear, and the lower needle bearing can be replaced separately.

Assembly

1. Thoroughly clean and check the condition of all parts of the steering mechanism.

2. Install the rack into the housing in the center position.

3. Install the drive gear so that the shear (arrow) at the end of the gear axle was perpendicular to the axis of the rack and was on the right side.

4. Screw on the cover with a new gasket and install a new O-ring.

5. Install the rail stop and, using a dial indicator, determine the required thickness of the washers along with the gasket.

6. Place the base of the indicator on the rail stop, and the measuring tip of the indicator on the support surface of the stop cover. Move the rail from stop to stop, determine the maximum deviation of the indicator needle.

7. Assemble a set of shims, the thickness of which, together with the gasket, should exceed the indicator readings by 0.05–0.125 mm.

8. Install the spring, pre-prepared set of washers, gasket and stop cover.

9. Check the torque of the drive gear, for which, using a dynamometer, rotate the gear at a speed of approximately 4 rpm. The torque must be between 6-13 Nm.

10. Install on one side the inner ball joint of the steering rod, having previously lubricated the bearing of the ball bearing. Screw on the hinge housing and retaining ring.

11. Adjust the moment of rotation of the hinge, for which gradually screw the hinge body until the force required to move the rod from the midpoint becomes 2.3 kg. To measure the displacement force, attach a spring scale to the threaded end of the rod at a distance of 6 mm from the end.

12. Tighten the hinge retaining ring without changing the position of the hinge body, and connect them with a pin, having previously drilled a new hole with a diameter of 4 mm. Be sure to pinch the pin.

13. Install protective cover and secure with clamps.

14. Fill steering gear with grease.

15. Install the tie rod on the other side of the mechanism, following the steps similar to those previously described.

16. Check rack drive gear torque and readjust if necessary.

Installation

1. Install the steering rack in the middle of the stroke.

2. Check that the wheels and steering wheel are in position "straight ahead".

3. Insert the steering gear from below the vehicle and connect it to the steering shaft.

4. Secure the steering gear with bolts and secure the bolts against unscrewing.

5. Connect the steering tips to the steering knuckles, screw on the nuts and fix with new cotter pins.

6. Screw in the coupling bolt of the steering shaft flange.

7. Lower the car.
