Front cross member

Withdrawal

Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the front wheels.

Remove the negative terminal from the battery. Install the lifting gear. to support the weight of the power unit when removing the cross member. Set the steering gear to drive straight ahead and unscrew the steering column shaft mounting bolt.

Unscrew bolts of fastening of a suspension bracket of the power unit to a cross beam (see fig. 10.22).



Disconnect the connector from the oxygen sensor harness. Unscrew lock nuts and separate a receiving exhaust pipe. Unscrew and remove the heat shields from the underbody to gain access to the shift mechanism.

Disconnect the gearshift mechanism.

Remove the pin, unscrew the tie rod ball joint nut and, using a puller, press the ball joints out of the steering knuckles.

Unscrew the clamping bolt securing the lower arm ball joint to the steering knuckle and, using a lever or a large screwdriver, remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Unscrew the bolt securing the right suspension of the power unit installation to the cross beam. Unscrew the second bolt securing the power unit to the cross beam.


Unscrew the lock nuts and remove the anti-roll bar links from the suspension. Install jacks under the cross beam and unscrew the 8 bolts of its fastening. Lower the jacks and remove the cross beam (see fig. 10.24).

Installation

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following points:

• before installation, clean the mating surfaces;
• when installing the cross beam, align the bolt holes and tighten them to the required torque;
• when installing the ball joint of the lower suspension arm to the steering knuckle, set the clamping bolt to its original position and, when tightening the nut, hold the bolt from turning;
• Secure the tie rod ball joint nut against loosening with a new pin.
