Models with brake drums
Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
Check that the handbrake is released. Remove the rubber plug from the drum brake shield and use a suitable screwdriver to release the automatic brake clearance adjuster.
On some models, the brake drum can be removed independently of the hub. Loosen the drum fixing screw and remove it.
Using a lever, remove the cap from the center of the hub. When installing, use a new cap (see fig. 10.25).
Unscrew the hub nut.
Attention. Wheel hub nuts have right hand and left hand threads. Left hand thread on the left, right hand thread on the right side of the car. Thus, on the left side, turn the nut to loosen clockwise.
Remove the brake drum together with the hub.
Attention. If the brake drum is worn and cannot be removed, further loosen the hand brake.
Models with rear disc brakes
Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
Remove the rear brake pads. Remove the 2 caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper from the brake disc. Using soft wire, tie the caliper under the wheel arch.
Unscrew the screw securing the brake disc and remove it from the hand brake pads and wheel hub.
Using a lever, remove the cap from the center of the hub. At installation use a new cap Unscrew a nut of fastening of a nave.
Attention. The wheel hub nut has a right hand thread and a left hand thread. Left hand thread on the left, right hand thread on the right side of the car.
Remove the wheel hub from the axle.
All models
Using a screwdriver, remove the gasket from the hole in the hub.
Remove the tapered bearing outer races from the hub using a drift. When knocking out the rings with a drift, do not allow them to be skewed, because. in this case the hub will be damaged (see fig. 10.28).
Clean the hub with a clean cloth dampened with alcohol. Install the rear hub bearing outer races into the hub. using tool FORD 15-051 or tubular mandrel of appropriate diameter.
Lubricate the inside of the tapered roller bearing with multipurpose lithium grease and insert into the hub.
Lubricate the new O-ring between the sealing lips and install it in place using a suitable tubular mandrel. Lubricate the outer roller bearing and insert it into the hub.
Install the hub with the brake drum on the axle. At the same time, make sure that dirt does not get into the bearing. Screw on a new self-locking hub nut and tighten to the specified torque. Fill a new hub cap with a small amount of grease and hammer it into the hub.
Attention. If the cap does not seal, water can enter the bearings and destroy them.
On models with disc rear brakes, install the brake disc or drum and secure it with the screw.
On models with disc brakes, install the caliper and secure it with bolts.
Install the rubber plug in the brake shield, and depress the brake pedal several times to adjust the brake pads. Install the wheel and lower the car.
