HCS and Endura-E engines
Insert the valve into place and wipe the top of the valve stem free of engine oil. Wrap the cracker grooves in the upper part of the valve with a piece of adhesive tape to protect the sealing edges of the valve stem seals from damage when they are installed. Lubricate the valve stem seal with fresh engine oil and, using a pipe mandrel, install on the valve guide. Remove adhesive tape from valve stem (see fig. 4D.37, 40.38)
Install the spring and upper spring plate. While maintaining the valve in the closed position with a special tool, compress the valve spring and install crackers. Slowly remove the valve spring compressor. Repeat the operation on the remaining valves.
Finally, hit the end of each valve stem with a plastic or copper mallet until the valve opens slightly and all the valve parts are in place.
CVH and PTE engines
Install the lower spring plate in place (see fig. 4D.39).
Install the new oil seal in the correct orientation (see fig. 40.40). To protect the working edges of the valve stem cap, when installing the valve in place, wrap the grooves of the valve stem under the crackers with insulating tape, lubricate the valve stem with engine oil and insert the valve (see fig. 4D.41).
Remove the tape from the grooves in the valve stem, then install the springs and upper spring cap.
Maintaining the valve in the closed position. compress the valve spring with a special tool and install the crackers in place. Slowly remove the spring compressor (see fig. 40.42).
Install the remaining valves in the cylinder head. Tap the stem of each valve with a plastic or copper mallet until all parts of the valve are in place.
Zetec and Zetec-E engines
Using molybdenum disulphide grease or clean engine oil, lubricate the valve stem and install the valve to the cylinder head. If previously removed valves are installed, then install them each in its place.
Install a new slinger cap on top of the valve stem. Install the lower spring plate. When installing the spring, the oil deflector cap will be installed in its place (see fig. 4D.43).
Install the valve spring and upper spring plate. Using a special tool, compress the valve spring and install crackers 8 in the groove of the valve stem. Lubricate the lugs with a drop of lubricant when installing them Slowly release the spring compressor (see fig. 4D.44).
After installing the valve, tap the valve stem with a plastic mallet so that all parts of the valve are in place. Install the remaining valves. Install hydraulic tappets.
