Gearbox B5 and iB5
Engage 2nd gear on a 4-speed gearbox or 4th gear on a 5-speed gearbox. Unscrew and remove the shift lever knob. Using a lever, remove the protective cover of the gear lever and remove it up the lever (see fig. 7A.7, 7A.8).
Loosen the 4 nuts securing the gearshift mechanism (see fig. 7A.9).
Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Unscrew the exhaust system from the exhaust pipe. Disconnect the rubber cushions of the exhaust system and remove the exhaust system. On models with a catalytic converter, remove the heat shield from the underside of the vehicle to gain access to the transmission control mechanism (see fig. 7A.10).
Mark the shift shaft and shift link, then unscrew the clamp bolt and remove the link from the shaft. Remove the gear change stabilizer bolt. Support the gearshift mechanism from below. unscrew 4 nuts and remove the mechanism from under the car (see fig. 7A.11).

Unscrew and remove the gear lever knob, then use the lever to remove the gear lever protective cover and remove it up the lever.
Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Place the shift lever in neutral position.
Remove the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter. To access the gearshift mechanism, remove the heat shield. Unscrew the bolt securing the gear shift rod to the shaft, on the rear side of the gearbox (see fig. 7A.12).
Mark the position of the front and rear sections of the shift rod relative to each other. Loosen the clamp bolt and remove the front shift linkage section (see fig. 7A.13).
Remove the bolt securing the shift support link to the suspension at the rear of the transmission. While supporting the gearshift mechanism, unscrew the fastening nuts and remove the gearshift mechanism from under the vehicle.
Installation. All models
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Lubricate the pivot points with a thin layer of grease when installing.
