Replacing the O-rings of the differential
Differential sealing rings are located on both sides of the gearbox, at the points of connection of the drive shafts to the gearbox.
Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the corresponding drive shaft.
Wipe off the old o-ring and when replacing on a B5 or iB5 gearbox, pay attention to the orientation and installation depth of the o-ring. On gearboxes of the MTX-75 type, the sealing ring is installed up to the stop in the gearbox housing. Using a screwdriver or lever, being careful, remove the O-ring from the gearbox housing (see fig. 7A.17).
Wipe the bearing surface of the O-ring in the gearbox housing.
Lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil, then insert it into the transmission case by hand.
Using an appropriate mandrel, install the O-ring into the seat to the desired depth (see fig. 7A.18).
Install the drive shaft.
Sealing ring of a shaft of a choice of transfers
Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands.
Remove the bolt securing the shift rod to the shaft at the rear of the gearbox. Remove the shift rod and remove the rubber protective boot from the shaft.
Using a suitable tool or grips, remove the O-ring from the transaxle case. In the absence of special tools to extract the sealing ring. it can be retrieved by the following method. Drill two small holes in the O-ring, on opposite sides of the ring. Screw self-tapping screws into the holes and remove the O-ring by the screw heads.
Wipe the bearing surface of the O-ring in the gearbox housing.
Lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil, then insert it into the transmission case by hand.
Using an appropriate arbor, install the O-ring all the way into the transaxle case.
Establish a rubber protective cover on a shaft of a gear change.
Connect the shift rod to the shaft and tighten the mounting bolt.
Adjust the shift rod if necessary.
