Pic. 17.1. Location of the front seat belt tensioner
3-point front seat belts equipped with a belt tensioner since 1996 (pic. 17.1). In a collision, the belts tighten sharply for 10 ms and the next 5 ms press the person to the back of the front seat. This happens automatically as soon as the vehicle deceleration exceeds the programmed value. The gas generators ignite and pre-tension the belts. Maintenance of such security systems must be carried out at service centers by specially trained personnel.
Deactivating the belt pretensioner
Be very careful when working near the seat belt pre-tensioner, as even a light blow from a hammer or wrench vibration can activate the sensor and ignite the squibs. For the safety of all body work on the bottom of the vehicle, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and wait 5 minutes for the airbag and belt tensioner capacitors to discharge.
