When running a cold engine, light knocking from the engine compartment is not necessarily a cause for concern. Hard metal knocks when the engine is warm almost always indicate serious damage. The most common damage occurs on the connecting rod bearing shells. The main bearings of the crankshaft, and there are five of them in the Fiesta car, are damaged much less frequently. If the bearing is damaged, a thorough inspection of the motor is required. If this happens, it is enough to replace the connecting rod or main bearing shell - the specialist will offer you a big repair (crankshaft grinding, nitriding, replacement of bearings and liners) or replacement of engine components.
