Airbag Test and Deployment/Deployment Wire/ Pyrotechnic Pretensioner 418-S055 (40-007A)

General equipment: Battery, 12 V.

All cars

WARNING: To minimize the risk of injury if an air bag deploys prematurely, always carry an active air bag module with the air bag and bezel facing away from your torso. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.

WARNING: To minimize the possibility of premature airbag deployment, active airbag modules should only be installed on grounded workbenches. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.

1. Disconnect a wire of weight from the accumulator. See Section 414-01 for more information.

2. Remove the module (And) airbags to be deployed. For more information, please refer to the relevant procedure (am), presented in this section.

Single Stage Airbag Modules

3. Connect test lead to airbag module and adapter (driver airbag module shown).

Two-stage airbag modules

4.
CAUTION: Do not connect both test leads to the adapter. The two airbag module inflators must be deployed separately.

Connect the two test leads to the airbag module and the other end of one of the test leads to the adapter (driver airbag module shown).

5.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the plug connector (ov) test lead when deploying the air bag, lift the air bag module up on two pieces of wood.

Install the airbag module in a suitable rigid wire frame with the airbag module cover facing up.

6. Connect the deployment wire to the adapter.

7.
WARNING: Before proceeding with any further action, make sure that all personnel in the vicinity are aware of the imminent occurrence of loud noise (cotton). Don't let anyone get closer than six meters. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury.

Get as far away from the airbag module as possible and connect the deployment wire to the battery.

8.
WARNING: Do not touch the airbag module immediately after deployment as the airbag module will be very hot.

WARNING: After the air bag has been deployed, traces of sodium hydroxide, a product of combustion that causes skin irritation, may remain on the surface of the air bag. Wear protective gloves when working on any deployed airbag modules.

To deploy the airbag, press both switches.
