Withdrawal


WARNING: To eliminate the risk of accidental deployment, the backup power to the airbag control module must be discharged. Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the wire (ov) "masses" battery prior to any repair or adjustment to the auxiliary restraint system (SRS) or any element (ov), adjacent to the SRS sensors. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.


WARNING: Always wear safety goggles when working on a vehicle equipped with airbags and when working on the airbag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.


WARNING: To minimize the possibility of premature deployment of the airbag, do not use the radio key code savers when operating the secondary restraint system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.


WARNING: To minimize the risk of injury if an air bag deploys prematurely, always carry a charged air bag module with the air bag and bezel facing away from your torso. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.


WARNING: To minimize the possibility of premature deployment of airbags, charged airbag modules should only be installed on grounded workbenches with the bezel facing up. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.


WARNING: Never touch the tester probes to the electrical connectors of the airbag modules or any other element of the auxiliary restraint system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.



WARNING: Painting the decorative cover on the driver's airbag module or instrument panel may damage the decorative cover and the airbags. Under no circumstances should you attempt to paint discolored or damaged decorative covers on airbag modules or the instrument panel. Install a new item. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.


1. Disconnect the wire "masses" battery. See Section 414-01 for more information.

2. Remove the glove box.
  • Detach the damper from the glove box.

NOTE: New passenger airbag modules have a decorative cover secured with a bracket and two bolts. The original version of the passenger airbag module had a tethered decorative cover.


Determine if the passenger airbag module has a fixed bracket or tether type decorative cover (decorative cover with fixed bracket shown).
  • Fixed bracket passenger airbag module decorative cover, do not continue with this procedure.
  • Tethered type passenger airbag module decorative cover, continue this procedure.



4. Disconnect a forward part of a decorative cover of the pillow of safety of the passenger from the panel of devices.


  • Use the special tool to carefully release the fastener clips, starting at the front outer edge.



5. Disconnect the decorative cover of the passenger airbag module from the instrument panel.
  • 1. Raise the outer edge.
  • 2. Lift the cover, moving it towards the windshield, to release the fastening clips.



6. Disconnect the passenger airbag module and reinforcement bracket from the instrument panel.

NOTE: You may need pointed pliers to release the locking tabs on the electrical connector.



Remove the passenger airbag module.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector.

WARNING: If a new passenger airbag module is installed after the passenger airbag has deployed, the instrument panel must be inspected for damage and a new instrument panel installed if any damage is found. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.


Inspect the instrument panel for damage in the areas shown.



9. Remove instrument panel if necessary. Refer to Section 501-12 for more information.

Installation


All cars

NOTE: If a genuine passenger airbag module is to be installed, reverse the removal procedure. If a new passenger air bag module is to be installed, continue this procedure.


1. If necessary, install a new instrument panel. Refer to Section 501-12 for more information.

Left hand drive vehicles

2. Using the dimensions taken from the template, mark the instrument panel areas to be removed.



Right hand drive vehicles

3. Using the dimensions taken from the template, mark the instrument panel areas to be removed.



All cars

WARNING: Wear gloves and goggles when cutting the instrument panel. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.


Using a suitable knife, remove the necessary material (right hand drive variant shown).



5. Remove the ventilation duct.
  • Detach the fastening clip.



6. Disconnect the demist system tube from the heater housing.



7. Install the passenger airbag module.
  • Connect the electrical connector.



8. Install reinforcement bracket.



9. Connect the passenger airbag module and reinforcement bracket to the instrument panel.

NOTE: Pass the bezel cover brackets through the passenger airbag module and movable bracket.


Install the decorative cover of the passenger airbag module.



11.
NOTE: Do not fully tighten the passenger airbag module decorative cover bolts at this point.


Install the passenger airbag module decorative cover bolts.



12.
WARNING: Make sure that all the fastening clips of the passenger airbag module decorative cover are properly engaged and that the decorative cover is flush with the instrument panel.


Tighten the passenger airbag module movable bracket nuts.



13. Tighten bolts of fastening of a decorative cover of the module of an airbag of the passenger.



14. Connect the demist system tube to the heater body.



15. Install ventilation piping.
  • Connect clamp.



16. Install the glove compartment.
  • Connect the damper to the glove compartment.



17. Connect the wire "masses" to the battery. Refer to Section 414-01 for more information.
