Digital multimeter 105-R0051 or equivalent
World Diagnostic System (WDS) 418-F224

Operating principle

The GEM controls and manages various functions as well as the anti-theft, central locking and dual locking systems. GEM is located on the right pillar "A". GEM has a self-test function. Full diagnostics covers input and output devices. Several different types of GEMs are in use.

Inspection and verification

1. Check the validity of the customer's complaint.

2. Perform a visual check for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Table

Electrical factors:
  • Fuse (And)
  • Lamp (s)
  • Plug connector (s)
  • Wiring harness

3. If an obvious cause for a reported or received complaint is found, address it before proceeding with the next steps (if possible).

4. If visual inspection does not show the cause of the complaint, check the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

PINPOINT TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH ROUTE COMPUTER UNIT

STATES

DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS

A1: PERFORMING A SELF-TEST

1 Drive the ON position.

2 To enter the self-test mode, press the 'S' button for five seconds. The individual tests can then be carried out in succession by pressing the S button as many times as required. To exit the self-test mode at any time, press the R button.

3 Entry requirements for checks:

Refer to the following table..

4 Determine the result.

• Is the self test successful?

Yes

REPAIR, if necessary TEST the system using WDS. CHECK the system is working properly.

No

If the trip computer does not respond to scan tool prompts, check the system using WDS: Refer to Section 418-00 for more information.

Number of times the S button was pressed

Description of verification steps

1

Turn on the backlight of all displays and segments. The beep generator sends a request signal (duration 0.13 seconds every two seconds).

2

Turn on the backlight of all displays and segments. The beeper is turned off.

3

Requirement: Vehicle is moving. Turn off all displays and segments. The display shows "km/h". The input signal level from the vehicle speed sensor is being evaluated (VSS), the number of pulses is divided by 50 and displayed in discrete form from "000" before "999".

4

Requirement: The engine is running. The display shows "L/h". The input signal from the PCM is being evaluated (fuel consumption), the number of pulses is divided by 10 and shown on the display.

5

The display shows "WL/100km". The display shows the calculated value of the average fuel consumption.

6

The symbol appears on the display "Fuel pump". The value sent by the fuel level sensor is shown directly on the display in liters and/or gallons. If an open occurs in the fuel flow sensor circuit, the display will show "O-C". If a short circuit occurs in the fuel flow sensor circuit, the display shows "S-C".

7

The display shows "----->Fuel pump symbol" and reference voltage value for the fuel gauge sensor.

8

The display shows the symbol "MPG", the currently programmed correction factor for the fuel consumption value (value can be calibrated between -25 and +25).

9

On display "°C", the outdoor temperature value is displayed directly. "O-C" displayed if the value is below -40°C or if there is a break in the electrical circuit. "S-C" displayed if the value is above 65°C or if there is a break in the electrical circuit.

10

The instrument illumination dimmer input voltage is compared with an internal value. If the comparison result is positive, the display shows "HI"; if the comparison result is negative, the display shows "LO".

11

The battery voltage is measured. "Lbt" displayed if the value is less than 11.5 V; "Hbt" displayed if the value is greater than 11.5 V.

12

Display "r8.8". The display shows the current ROM version (example: 2.9)

13

The self-test starts from the beginning.

PINPOINT TEST B: NO COMMUNICATION WITH COMMON ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)

STATES

DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS

B1: PERFORM A SELF-TEST

NOTE: When the perimeter anti-theft device is activated (signaling) self-test mode cannot be entered.

1 Enter the OFF position.

• Turn off all electrical loads.

• Switch the interior lighting to the delay function

• Engage PARK/NEUTRAL (Automatic transmission)

• Close all doors.

• Fasten the driver's seat belt

2 Enter the self-test mode: press and hold the heated rear window switch, turn the ignition switch to the RUN/START position, and release the heated rear window switch. This is confirmed by one sound and one light signal (the battery saver will turn off functions after an appropriate period of time).

• Inlet Tests: Anytime the wiper/washer switch is not in the Intermittent Clean position, inlet tests will be performed. If the input signal of any switch under test is correct, this is confirmed by one sound and one light signal.

Refer to the following table..

• Exit device checks: Any time the wiper/washer switch is not in the intermittent cleaning position (when the ignition switch is in the RUN/START position), input device checks will be performed. Activating the heated rear window switch will activate and deactivate the output devices in this sequence.

Refer to the following table..

• To exit service mode, press and hold the heated rear window switch, turn the ignition switch to the OFF/ACC position and release the heated rear window switch again. Any time the vehicle speed exceeds 5 km/h or no input device is activated for more than 20 seconds, the service mode is also exited. This is confirmed by three sound and one light signal.

• Self-test on demand

Refer to the following table..

3 Determine the result.

• Is the self test successful?

Yes

REPAIR, if necessary TEST the system using WDS. CHECK the system is working properly.

No

If the common electronics module does not respond to scan tool prompts, test the system using WDS: Refer to Section 418-00 for more information.

Input checks:
  • open the door
  • Turn on the parking lights
  • Turn on the heated windshield
  • Turn on rear window heating
  • Turn on the windshield washer
  • Turn on the windshield wipers
  • Turn on the rear window washer
  • Turn on the rear window wiper
  • Turn on the left turn signal
  • Turn on the right turn signal

Output checks:
  • Windshield wipers will be activated (return to the non-working position is confirmed by one beep)
  • Action: Measure the voltage in the rear window defroster electrical circuit.
  • Interior lighting will be on
  • Door Incomplete Warning Indicator will be on (Dashboard)
  • The rear window wiper will be activated
  • Action: Start the engine and exit using the heated rear window switch
  • Heated windshield will be activated (the heated windshield indicator will light up)
  • The seat belt warning light will illuminate (dashboard)
