Connecting an Auxiliary Battery Using Jumpers

            0

WARNING: If the booster battery has been recently charged and is gassing, cover the vent plugs or covers with a damp cloth. This will reduce the risk of an explosion if sparks occur when connecting the connecting wires (jumpers). Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury.

CAUTION: Battery discharge may be caused by an electrical short circuit. If the battery is discharging, it seems that even with all electrical circuits turned off, there is always an electrical circuit in the car that is energized. Such an electrical circuit may cause sparking when the connecting wires are connected (jumpers).

WARNING: Although it is not recommended to start the engine with jumper wires (jumpers), we do acknowledge that this may sometimes be the only practicable way to get the car moving. In this case, the discharged battery should be recharged immediately after starting using the connecting wires. Otherwise, permanent damage to the battery may occur.

  • Always make sure that the connecting wires (jumpers) correspond to the task. Heavy Duty Cables Should Be Used (designed for high currents).
  • The auxiliary battery voltage must always be the same as the vehicle battery voltage (meaning nominal characteristics). Batteries must be connected in parallel.
  • Before connecting the connecting wires, always check that all switchable electrical circuits have been switched off. This reduces the risk of sparks during the final connection.

WARNING: Whenever connecting wires are connected to the battery, the ends of these wires must not touch each other or "masses" (body) car. If a fully charged battery is short-circuited through the connecting wires, it may be discharged at a current exceeding 1000 A. This process will be accompanied by a violet spark and very fast heating of the connecting wires and terminals. In some cases, a battery explosion is also possible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury.

Always connect the connecting wires in the following order:
  • First connect to the positive terminal of the auxiliary battery, then to the positive terminal of the vehicle battery.
  • Next, connect to the negative terminal of the auxiliary battery and then to "mass" vehicle at a distance of at least 300 mm from the battery terminal, e.g. to the engine lift bracket.

Always reduce the engine speed to idle before connecting the connecting wires.

Before removing the connecting wires from a car that had a discharged battery, turn on the heater fan (maximum) or heated rear window. This will reduce the voltage peak that occurs after the wires are removed.

Connecting wires should always be disconnected in the reverse order of connection. Be extremely careful not to short the ends of the wires.

If you want to restore a dead battery, don't rely on a generator. It will take more than eight hours of continuous driving to charge the battery from the generator without any other additional load on the battery.
