Ignition system - non-distributive type
The ignition timing setting is set by the PCM according to engine operating conditions. Once the ignition timing is set, the PCM cuts off current to the low voltage circuits (primary chains) ignition coils, thus initiating ignition pulses that travel through the ignition wires to the spark plugs of the cylinders, in which sparks are generated.
The ignition coils are activated by the PCM in pairs (cylinders Nos. 1 and 4 and cylinders Nos. 2 and 3) and sending an ignition pulse to the cylinder on the ignition stroke and to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke. The presence of an ignition spark on the exhaust stroke provides afterburning of unburned fuel remaining in the cylinder, which reduces the toxicity of exhaust gases.
