Glow plugs

Glow plugs are located on the side of the cylinder head and serve to facilitate starting the engine and increase its efficiency. The glow plugs and glow plug indicator lamp are controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM).

Glow plugs pre-heat the combustion chambers, making it easier to start a cold engine. During preheating, the PCM receives an engine temperature signal from the cylinder head temperature sensor (CHT) and this determines the duration of the preheating process. The lower the temperature, the longer the preheating time. The maximum preheating time of 8 seconds corresponds to a temperature of -20°C or less. At temperatures above 80°C, preheating is not used.

After starting the engine, the glow plugs enter the post-glow phase. The post-heating phase helps improve idle performance and reduce hydrocarbon emissions by providing more efficient combustion immediately after start-up. The post-heating phase only works when the engine speed is less than 2500 rpm; above this frequency, the post-glow phase is interrupted to extend the life of the glow plugs. The maximum post-heating time of 30 seconds corresponds to a temperature of -20°C or less. Above 50°C there is no post-heating phase.
