The signal from the crankshaft position sensor is the basis for calculating the ignition timing. The AC voltage signal from the crankshaft position sensor is digitized by the powertrain control module. This digital signal is then used to determine the ignition coil's primary circuit timing.
The ignition timing is determined by the powertrain control module based on engine operating conditions. Once the ignition timing is determined, the powertrain control module interrupts the current flow to the primary circuit of the ignition coil, thereby energizing the ignition pulse, which is fed through the spark plug wires to the spark plugs, where the ignition spark is generated.
The ignition coils are fired by the powertrain control module in pairs (cylinders 1 and 4 and cylinders 2 and 3), sending one ignition spark to the cylinder where ignition occurs and one ignition spark to the corresponding cylinder on the exhaust stroke.
