Elimination of pressure in the fuel system

            0

Attention! Before you begin, please read the caution in paragraph 1 this chapter.

1. The fuel system presented in this chapter is defined as the system that consists of the fuel tank and the fuel pump/fuel gauge sensor, fuel filter, fuel injectors and pressure regulator installed in the fuel line, as well as metal piping and flexible hoses connecting these components. They all contain fuel that is under pressure when the engine is running and/or the ignition is on.

2. After turning off the ignition, the pressure 8 in the system is maintained for some time. Therefore, before removing the components, it must be eliminated.

3. Ford recommends that pressure be relieved using tool 29-033, which is installed on the fuel line control/pressure relief fitting. The fitting contains a Schrader valve (with blue plastic cap), located on the fuel line (see fig.2.3), and the device, when pressed on the valve core, acts as a tap. On 1997 or later models, you will need to remove the air duct connecting the air cleaner and air mass meter.

4. If you do not have such a device, place a container under the fitting and wrap it with a rag to catch fuel smudges. Do not press on the valve core without wrapping it with a rag, as this may result in splashing, and therefore a risk of fire or accident due to fuel getting into the eyes.

5. Residual pressure can also be relieved by disconnecting the power supply to the fuel pump while the engine is running. To do this, remove the fuel pump fuse (№14) and wait until the engine idles and stops due to lack of fuel pressure. Then crank the engine over with the starter one or two times to make sure the pressure is released. Then turn off the ignition. Be sure to install the fuse when finished.

6. Please note that after depressurizing and draining (even partial) fuel from the system, it will take significantly longer to start the engine again, since the system will first fill with fuel, and the pressure in it will be restored.
