General information

The ignition system includes the ignition switch, battery, crankshaft position/speed sensor, ignition coil, primary (low voltage) and secondary (high voltage) ignition circuits and spark plugs. On models with automatic transmission, the ignition unit is installed separately. On models with a manual transmission, its functions are performed by the ECU of the engine management system. The ignition system is controlled by the ECU of the engine management system. Receiving signals from sensors that monitor various engine functions (such as idle speed and piston position, intake air mass and temperature, coolant temperature, etc.) BEU provides spark supply at the optimal moment in all engine operating modes (see chapter 4A).

Note: All functions of the ignition system are controlled by the ECU, and therefore, the ignition system cannot be adjusted (see paragraph 6).

Precautionary measures

When servicing the ignition system, observe the following precautions:
  • A) If the engine does not start, turn off the ignition no later than 10 seconds after turning it on.
  • b) If a separate tachometer is required for service, check with your dealer before purchasing one, as some types of tachometers are not compatible with the ignition system. Always connect the tachometer in accordance with its manufacturer's instructions.
  • V) Never connect the ignition coil terminals to ground. This may damage the coil and/or ECU or ignition module (if it is allocated in a separate block).
  • G) Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
  • d) Make sure the ignition module is properly grounded (if available).
  • e) Read the warnings at the beginning of the next paragraph regarding the danger of high voltage.
