General information
This chapter provides information to help you prepare for repairs and purchase replacement parts. It also describes in detail the removal and installation of internal engine components and the inspection of parts.
Next, it is assumed that the engine is removed from the car. For information regarding the repair of the engine installed in the car, as well as procedures for removing and installing external components for repairs, see the chapter 2A or 2B. Before starting repairs, you must purchase spare parts. At the time this book was written, only a few remanufactured components were supplied for engine rebuilds. In many cases, it is more convenient and cost effective to replace a worn or damaged engine with a serviceable one.
Warning: Although the V8 engine is designed to repair and replace the piston group and crankshaft, at the time of this writing, Ford does not produce replacement parts for such repairs. Thus, cylinder boring, crankshaft turning is impossible. It is also impossible to replace the main bearing shells and reinstall the lower crankcase after it has been removed.
