Checking the Fluid Level in an Automatic Transmission

            0

Every 16,000 km or 12 months.

1. In an automatic transmission, it is very important to maintain the correct fluid level. Lowering the level can lead to slipping of the friction elements or to a complete cessation of torque transmission. Overfilling can cause foaming, fluid leaks and damage to the transmission.

2. The fluid level must be monitored on a warm transmission (at its normal operating temperature). This temperature value is reached after a 15-kilometer ride (or 25 km in cold weather),

Attention: If you have made a long trip at high speed or drove around the city in hot weather, or transported a trailer, you cannot check the fluid level immediately after this, as the readings will be inaccurate. Let the liquid cool for about 30 minutes.

3. Park the vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake and start the engine. With the engine idling, press the brake pedal and move the selector through all modes three times, starting and ending at "R".

4. Bring the engine to idle and keep it in this mode for 1 min. Then (while the engine is idling) pull the dipstick out of the transmission tube (see fig. 6.4). Pay attention to the condition and color of the fluid on the dipstick.

5. Wipe off the liquid from the dipstick with a clean cloth and re-insert it into the nozzle so that its cap sits in place.

6. Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level. It must be between the marks "MIN" And "MAX". If the level matches the mark "MIN", stop the engine and add regulated fluid to the transmission through the dipstick tube. Use a funnel if needed (see fig. 6.6). It is very important to ensure that dirt does not get into the transmission.

7. Add liquid little by little and periodically check the level until it reaches the regulated value (see fig. 6.7).

8. If frequent replenishment of the transmission fluid level is required, this indicates a leak that must be identified and repaired immediately,

9. While checking the level, evaluate the condition of the fluid. If the fluid at the end of the dipstick is black or dark reddish brown, or if it smells burnt, then the fluid needs to be replaced. If you are in doubt about the condition of the fluid, take some of the new fluid and compare it to the old one for color and smell.
