1. Access to the gear is possible from above or below. To remove it from above, you need access from the top of the engine. To do this, you need to remove the air flow meter and the air duct (chapter 4). To remove the gear from below, you need access to the top of the transmission. First you need to raise the front end, install it on a support.

2. On early production models, remove the nut and disconnect the speedometer cable from the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission. Hold the sensor with one wrench, and unscrew the cable nut with the other.

3. Disconnect the wiring from the vehicle speed sensor. Then unscrew the sensor from the top of the drive gear.

4. Using pliers, remove the drive gear lock pin from the transmission housing.

5. Remove the speedometer drive gear and bearing from the top of the transmission.

6. Use a small screwdriver to remove the O-ring from the bearing groove.

7. Wash the drive gear and bearing, as well as the seat in the transmission housing.

Installation

8. Installation - in the reverse order of removal. Apply some oil to the new O-ring and insert it into the transmission case. Drive in the locking pin with a hammer.
