Pic. 205. Setting the steering wheel in a position corresponding to the rectilinear movement of the car
Check wheel alignment as follows: (first make sure that the steering wheel is set to the position corresponding to the rectilinear movement of the car (pic. 205), this position is locked by the steering wheel lock):
- attach the toe-in gauge to the front of the rims at the height of the wheel hub;
- set the template to zero and mark with chalk on the rims the places where the two measuring pins are applied;
- move the car forward half a turn of the front wheels and attach the template pins to the rear side of the rims on the places marked with chalk, move the pins accordingly or push them apart and press them with the adjusting bolt;
- read the instrument reading.
When adjusting the toe, proceed as follows:
Pic. 206. Wheel alignment adjustment
- loosen the fastening clamps 2 (pic. 206) cuffs of the steering mechanism at the inner ends of the tie rod and locknut 1 of the tie rod at the outer ends (left arrow), work on the right and left;
Pic. 207. The direction of rotation of the transverse steering rods when adjusting the toe-in
- adjust the length of both tie rods by turning it to the left or right, as indicated by the arrow in fig. 207;
- the adjustment is carried out in several attempts (adjust the tie rods on both sides in the same direction, by the same number of turns), only by repeated measurements it is possible to achieve the desired indicator. After adjustment, tighten locknuts 1 (see fig. 206) torque of 41 Nm and fasten the cuffs of the steering mechanism with clamps 2 again.
