- disconnect the battery and leave the car for at least 5 minutes to avoid erroneous deployment of the airbag;
- unscrew the two bolts securing the airbag unit from the back of the steering wheel and carefully remove the unit from the front side of the steering wheel so that the multi-pin plug connector can be removed from the rear side of the unit;
Warning: Place the block with the mechanism upside down in a protected place to avoid unintentional operation of the block.
- set the steering wheel to the middle position and block in this state;
- Turn away a bolt in the middle of a steering wheel and remove a wheel from a shaft of a bipod of a steering.
Install in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the steering wheel nut to 50 Nm.
Sometimes it happens that the wheel is not accurately set to the middle position. This is due to the different length of the tie rods. Fix it like this:
- when the vehicle is moving in a straight line, make marks on the steering wheel hub and steering column lining with a felt-tip pen to mark the position of the wheel;
- put the car on supports;
- put marks on both transverse rods with a sharp object on the left and right of the locknut to fix how the rods and their tips are located, then loosen the locknuts and the cuff mounting collars so that the rods can be rotated without cuffs.
Now, according to the specified wheel position, the tie rods can be adjusted as follows:
- if the steering wheel is turned to the left, then, looking from the left side of the car, turn both rods by the same value to the right;
- if the steering wheel is turned to the left, then, looking from the left side of the car, turn both rods by the same value to the left;
- the adjustment is carried out empirically, in general the following rule is true: turn the transverse rods by 30°for every 1°of wheel rotation;
- tighten the locknuts and fasten the cuffs, check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment.
