Pic. 2. Location of nameplates in the engine compartment
The nameplate can be found with the hood open in the engine compartment (pic. 2). It contains a sequence of numbers and letters that indicate the car model, permissible load capacity, engine, final reduction ratio, paint number, interior equipment, etc. The car code is also visible through the windshield (right arrow). On fig. 3 shows where the number is engraved. The rating plate next to it is often provided with abbreviations, which are self-explanatory, but always contain letter codes. They are decrypted as follows:
Pic. 3. Location of vehicle identification number
- the first three letters indicate in which country the car was made. Cars made in Cologne are identified by letters «WFO». Positions 5 and 11 indicate the execution of the model («AF» - four-door limousine, «AA» - five-door limousine, «AN» - station wagon). Positions 6 and 7 indicate equipment. For example, «D» designates a version of the type «CLX»; «G» - performance «GLX». The letter at number 8 indicates the origin of the product. Cars from Cologne in this position are marked with the letter «G», while the letter at number 9 indicates the assembly plant («A» stands for Cologne). Letter number 10, here through «B», indicates that this is a Mondeo vehicle;
- the letter in position 12 indicates the year of issue. Year of issue 1996 is indicated as «T», and then in alphabetical order, for example, 2000 is denoted by the letter «X». Now it is already known that after the year 2000 this position is replaced by ordinal numbers, and the first digit will be «1»;
- the letter immediately following this position indicates the month of manufacture, followed by the serial number of the vehicle itself (5 positions). It must always be specified in full when ordering spare parts. The nameplate is also engraved with the designation of the engine installed in the vehicle.
Until the end of April 1998, the following engine designations on the nameplate were adopted:
1.6 l «L1» or «P»
1.8 l «RK» or «J»
2.0 l «NG» or «B»
Since May 1998, the following engine designations on the nameplate have been adopted:
1.6 l «LIN»
1.8 l «RKF» or «RKH»
2.0 l «NGB» or «NGC»
Pic. 4. Factory identification plate: 1 - number of permission to operate; 2 - number of definition of the type of car; 3 — admissible weight of the car; 4 - permissible gross weight (e.g. with caravan); 5 - permissible load on the front axle; 6 - permissible load on the rear axle; 7 - only for diesel vehicles; 8 - version (only certain areas); 9 - not used for Mondeo; 10 - body type (A, B or C); 11 - adjustment of exhaust gases; 12 - body enamel; 13 - interior equipment; 14 - gear ratio of the main gear; 15 - transmission version (gearbox type letters/numbers); 16 - installed engine; 17 - installed steering (left side - 1); 18 - not used for Mondeo
On the 2.5-liter engine, the number is the same for all years of manufacture, the designation is engraved here «SE» or «H». Further, the nameplate contains information on various parameters of the mass of the vehicle and axles, steering, gearbox, final drive, interior equipment, etc. In fig. 4 shows what the nameplate looks like.
Pic. 5. Location of the engine number on gasoline engines: 1 - engine type; 2 - serial number of the engine; 3 - connecting flange of the engine; 4 - air filter
The next important information is the engine number, which begins with the distinguishing letters of the installed engine (see Attachment). The number on all 16V motors is given in the location indicated in fig. 5. Three characteristic letters are engraved on the cylinder block, and not both of the above letters on the nameplate. The serial number of the installed engine follows these letters.
The sticker on the top cover of the toothed drive belt contains information about the volume of the cylinders. On the 2.5 liter engine, the important details of the engine number can be found at the locations indicated in fig. 5: number (2) knocked out, and the number (1) engraved in position.
When ordering spare parts and in other cases, the chassis number or engine number must be specified.
