17.10.1. Causes of tire wear
The front wheels drive the car, steer it and carry the main load when braking. As a result, the front tires wear out earlier than the rear pneumatic tires. Tire condition is best checked with the car raised on a jack. Check the condition of the tires as follows:
- rotate each wheel, use a screwdriver to carefully remove foreign objects from the tread; if there is a chip or a nail in any place of the surface of the tire, check the tightness of the tire;
- inspect the tire for damage, such as cuts, cracks, tread wear, moisture penetrates through the damaged rubber;
Pic. 305. Using a special gauge to measure tire tread depth
- the tread pattern over the entire working surface of the tire must have a depth of at least 1.6 mm; at this mark, a wear indicator can be observed in several places on the working surface. Letters «twi» (tread wear indicator - tread wear indicator) on the sidewalls of the tire indicate where the indicators are located (for safety change summer tires at 2 mm depth, winter tires at 4 mm depth). A special gauge is used to measure the depth of a drawing (calipers), which is installed on the tire (pic. 305);
- check whether all tires are worn evenly;
- carefully inspect the sidewalls of the tire, the presence of dents indicates damage to the tire carcass.
