Measuring the axial clearance (backlash) of the camshaft

To do this, do the following:

- fix the dial indicator in front of the head and cylinder block so that the measuring pin rests on the end of the shaft to be measured;

- move the camshaft by hand first in one direction, set the dial indicator to zero and move the shaft in the other direction.

The value shown by the indicator is the axial play, which should be 0.080–0.22 mm. If the end play does not meet the required value, then the adjacent surface on the cylinder head or shaft is worn and worn parts must be determined.
