Most often, your Mondeo leaves the factory with a maintenance-free lead-calcium battery (Sa) on board. Its service life is highly dependent on operating conditions: any start of a cold engine, predominantly driving short distances with a large number of stops at traffic lights, as well as driving in mode «Stop-and-go», any additional consumer (air conditioning, heated front and rear windows, interior ventilation, headlights, etc.) affect the electric battery more than regular flights over long distances. But still, new batteries can last from two to three years. If you must equip your Mondeo with a new battery, Ford mandates the use of a Ca battery. If you still decide on a cheaper spare battery with serviceable cells, then from time to time you should check the battery electrolyte. The electrolyte is sulfuric acid diluted with distilled water.
High ambient temperatures or a defective voltage regulator bring this mixture out of equilibrium - the water evaporates. During a long standing period, the battery automatically discharges itself. This may also lead to «lack of water», as well as a deep discharge of an external current consumer (e.g. refrigeration unit in the cigarette lighter). Top up the required volume only with distilled water - tap water, like boiled water, contains conductive salts and other mineral substances that have a negative effect on the battery. IN «service-friendly» accumulators «evaporative» water condenses in the pipeline labyrinth above the cells and remains in the accumulator.
