Engine cranking

To perform a number of work on the engine, it is necessary that the position of the pistons be accurately fixed in the cylinders. Based on the top dead center of the first cylinder, the exact positions of the other pistons are automatically set.

TDC position of the 1st cylinder: Piston of the 1st cylinder (on the right in relation to the direction of travel, in the V6 the rear row of cylinders) precisely set at top dead center if the valves of the fourth cylinder overlap (exhaust valve closed, intake valve starts to open). The valves of the first cylinder are closed. In older engines with an ignition distributor, it was also possible to check the TDC of the 1st cylinder by the position of the distributor slider and flywheel (the distributor slider is mounted above the marking on the distributor body, the flywheel marking is consistent with the mark on the inspection hole).

PROCEDURE
  1. As with changing a wheel, lift the front wheel and shift into 5th gear. If you now rotate the suspended wheel forward, then the drive shaft will automatically «works» with him. It will be easier if the spark plugs are removed first (nozzles). If you don't have the opportunity «steadily» lift the car, then engage 5th gear and carefully move the car until the piston of the 1st cylinder is in the TDC position.
  2. When acquiring a little dexterity over time, the engine can also be turned using an insert - to do this, place this element on the generator belt pulley. The engine will crank better if the drive belts are pressed against the belt drive. However, when using this method, make sure that the motor always rotates in a clockwise direction.
  1. Can only be accurately set with a special tool: TDC of the crankshafts. In Ford workshops, a VMTT set screw is screwed into the engine block from the side (special tool 303-507 (21-210). Then turn the engine in the direction of rotation until the crankshaft cheeks are «tightly» touch the mounting pin.

  1. On the safe side only with a special tool: Ford installs the camshafts at TDC using a special tool (indicated by an arrow).

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Checking spark plugs

Since carburetor engines are different from diesel units, they relate to forced ignition, the spark plugs determine the working cycle here. In previous years, spark plugs were very sensitive parts that reached their performance limit no later than 12,000 kilometers. With the advent of modern materials, lead-free gasoline and, above all, high-power electronic ignition systems, everything has changed fundamentally. However, spark plugs still have «allergy» to moisture, for example, after washing the engine, but a mileage of 60,000 kilometers is already a common thing for them. Ford recommends replacing spark plugs every 60,000 miles. Nevertheless, the spark plugs should never be lost sight of, inspect the spark plugs every 20,000 kilometers: a specialist can already judge the condition of the engine by the look of the spark plug.
