Replacing camshaft seals

            0

If traces of oil leakage through the camshaft seals are found, first check if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged and if the hoses of this system are pinched, if necessary, repair the problem. If the oil leak continues, replace the seals.

NOTE: Operation shown on the 1.6L Duratec Ti-VCT engine. Camshaft seals for 2.0 and 2.3 liter Duratec-HE engines are replaced in the same way.

You will need: all the tools needed to remove the cylinder head cover, timing belt, as well as a "19" wrench, a "16" socket, a flat-blade screwdriver.

1. Disconnect a wire from the minus plug of the storage battery.

2. Remove all spark plugs (see Spark Plug Replacement and Maintenance).

3. Remove the cylinder head cover (refer to Cylinder Head Cover Gasket Replacement).

4. Remove the timing belt (refer to Inspection and replacement of the timing belt for the 1.6L duratec ti-vct engine).

5. Holding the camshafts from turning with a key for the hexagonal sections on the shafts, unscrew the bolts B (pic. 5.32) fastening mechanisms VCT (pos. A) and remove the VCT gears from the camshafts.

6. Using a screwdriver, remove the seals (pic. 5.33) from the cylinder head sockets.

7. Before installing new oil seals, inspect their working edges. They should be smooth, without tears, dents and rubber influxes. Gland springs must be intact and unstretched. Lubricate the working edges with engine oil.

USEFUL ADVICE: To facilitate the pressing of the seals, make small chamfers on their seating edges with a needle file or a fine emery wheel.

8. Install the oil seals with the working edges inside the sockets of the block head, carefully fill the working edges on the camshafts (e.g. with a wooden stick) and press it in with a suitable mandrel. As a mandrel, you can use a suitable size head from the tool kit or an old oil seal.

9. Establish all removed details and knots in an order, the return to removal.

10. Adjust the tension of the timing belt (refer to Inspection and replacement of the timing belt for the 1.6L duratec ti-vct engine).
