The coil spring, together with the new segment/tooth ratchet mechanism, immediately eliminates the resulting gap in the parking brake cable. The mechanism functions only when the parking brake lever is fully released. After the subsequent tension of the parking brake, the gap disappears. Also, if the cable is too tight when the lever is released, the adjustment unit corrects the tension.
