Attention! The shock absorber strut can be removed in two different ways. The second method is given at the end of the chapter.
Withdrawal
Mark the position of the wheels on the hub with paint in order to install them in their original place during assembly. Loosen the wheel nuts with the vehicle lowered. Raise the rear of the car and remove the rear wheels.
Where necessary, unscrew the ABS sensor -5- from the axle pin, disconnect the wire from the shock absorber strut.
Where necessary, disconnect the electronic damper adjustment plug and disconnect the wire from the shock absorber strut.
Vehicle with disc brakes
Remove the brake caliper see 15.6.
Hang the caliper with a wire from the inner mudguard, taking care not to twist or pull the brake hose. The brake hose remains connected, otherwise you will have to bleed the air from the brake system after installation.
Car with drum brakes
Clamp the brake hose with a suitable clamp.
Disconnect the brake hose from the holder on the shock absorber strut
Remove the brake hose clip from the shock absorber
Disconnect the stabilizer link from the front control arm.
Detach the torque rod -3- from the axle pin -1-.
Disconnect the front -2- and rear -4- transverse arm from the trunnion.
Turn out a clamping bolt of fastening of a shock-absorber rack on a pin.
Extend the axle trunnion clamp and remove the shock absorber strut. To do this, a FORD service station uses tool 14-039. The device is inserted into the groove of the trunnion, as shown in the figure, and the lever is rotated 90°. thereby freeing the shock absorber. For this operation, a chisel or a suitable pry bar can be used, taking care not to damage small parts.
Compress the spring with two thin compression tools. At FORD stations, fixture 14-02 is used for this.
Turn out two bolts of fastening of the top support of a shock-absorber rack in a wheel arch and remove a shock-absorber rack.
Installation
Install the shock absorber strut into the wheel well, while guiding the upper support mold to the appropriate location in the wheel well. Fasten the upper support with a torque of 30 Nm.
Release the spring and install the shock absorber strut on the cross member.
Insert the shock absorber into the axle stub. Remove the spreader.
Install the new shock absorber self-locking clamp bolt, making sure the bolt goes through the groove in the mounting plate. Tighten the bolt to 85 Nm.
Attach the front and rear wishbone.
Attention! Perform final tightening only with the vehicle on wheels.
Fasten, without tightening the bolt, the torque rod to the trunnion.
Fasten, without tightening the threaded connection, the connecting element of the stabilizer on the front transverse arm.
Drum brakes: connect the brake hose. When doing this, make sure that the brake hose and extension cord are not stretched or changed shape. Bleed the air from the brake system, see clause 15.12.
Disc brakes: install brake caliper, see 15.6.
Connect, where necessary, the multi-pin plug of the electronic damper adjustment and fix the wire to the shock absorber strut.
Screw in, if removed, the ABS sensor, 10 Nm.
Install the rear wheels so that the marks made earlier match. Apply a light coat of grease to the centering surface on the wheel hub before installing the wheels. Screw on the wheel nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the nuts crosswise to 100 Nm.
Tighten the following bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
Attention! The car must be on wheels:
- Front wishbone on axle trunnion: 85 Nm
- Rear wishbone on axle trunnion: 125 Nm
- Torque rod on axle trunnion: 120 Nm
- Connecting element on transverse arm: 35 Nm
Removal and installation of shock absorber strut, second option
Raise the vehicle.
Carefully support the rear axle cross member.
Turn out four bolts of fastening of a beam and lower it down.
Turn out a clamping bolt of fastening of a shock-absorber rack on a pin.
Extend the axle trunnion clamp with tool 14-039 and pull the trunnion down off the shock strut.
Turn out bolts of fastening and remove a shock-absorber rack.
Install the shock absorber strut into the wheel arch and secure.
Insert the shock absorber strut into the axle stub and tighten the clamping bolt to 85 Nm.
Raise the cross member and align the guide holes -2/3- or the pins (4x4) and tighten bolts -1- to 120 Nm.
Lower the car.
Check the track of the rear wheels at a service station, correct if necessary.
