195 = tire width in mm
/70 = ratio of tire width to height (tire height is 70% of width)
If data on the ratio of height to width are not available (e.g. 155 R 13), this means that the tire has "normal" ratio. For radial tires, it is 82%.
H = speed class, H: up to 210 km/h (on new tires is not always given).
R = radial tire
14 = wheel rim diameter in inches
89 - load index
Attention! If there is an M + S designation between the numbers 14 and 39, then this means that the tires have a winter profile. H = index of maximum allowable speed. The speed index comes last in the tire designation and applies to both summer and winter tyres.
Speed index
Index | Maximum allowable speed, km/h |
Q | 160 |
S | 180 |
T | 190 |
H | 210 |
V | 240 |
W | 270 |
Tire manufacturer data
The tire manufacturer's data is marked on the tire as a manufacturer's code.
Example: DOT CUL2 UM8 064 v TUBELESS
DOT = Department of Transportation (US Department of Transportation)
CU = manufacturer's abbreviation
L2 = tire size
UM8 = bus version
064 = date of manufacture = 6th week 1994
v = symbol of this decade (1990-1999)
TUBELESS = tubeless tire
(TUBETYPE = tubular tire)
