Generator Safety Precautions
Be sure to disconnect the battery when working with the generator.
Before removing the wires from the generator, it is necessary to mark them for re-installation strictly in their places.
Do not disconnect the battery or alternator while the engine is running.
When carrying out electric welding, disconnect the battery and generator.
Checking the performance of the generator
1. Check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt.
2. Connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals.
3. While observing the voltmeter readings, start the engine. In starter mode, the voltage can drop to 9 volts.
4. Increase the engine speed to 4000 rpm, while the voltage should increase to 13.7–14.6 volts. This indicates the normal operation of the generator and voltage regulator.
5. At an engine speed of 4000 rpm, turn on the high beam headlights or other powerful consumers of electricity, while the voltage drop should be no more than 0.4 volts.
6. In case of significant voltage deviations during the test, the generator must be checked in a specialized workshop.
