Main generator malfunctions

            0

When checking the generator, as well as when operating the car, a number of simple rules must be observed so as not to disable the generator:
  • do not allow the generator to operate with the battery disconnected;
  • do not check the operation of the generator for "spark", since in this case a significant current flows through the diodes, and they fail;
  • do not check diodes with a voltage of more than 12 V or with a megger;
  • when carrying out electric welding work, disconnect all wires from the generator and from the battery;
  • check the components and circuits of electrical equipment and troubleshoot when the engine is not running and the battery is disconnected.

Cause
Elimination Method
When the ignition is turned on, the battery charging indicator lamp does not light up
Break in the wire between the generator, the ignition switch and the control lamp
Check the voltage on the circuit, starting from the generator
Low battery
Check the voltage and, if necessary, charge the battery
Bulb burnt out
If this is confirmed, replace the bulb
The alternator brushes do not fit snugly against the slip rings
Check the length of the brushes and their freedom of movement in the holder
The excitation winding of the generator burned out
Check the rotor and diodes, which, if defects are found, must be replaced
Battery Charging Warning Lamp Does Not Go Out When Engine RPM Increases
Broken voltage regulator
Replace with a new one
The wire between the generator and the control lamp has a ground contact
Replace the wiring harness or additionally insulate the wire
The battery charge warning lamp lights up when the ignition is off
Diode short circuit
Check diodes and replace faulty ones
