Caution: When topping up the coolant level, make sure that you add a coolant containing the same antifreeze that is already in the coolant. You can determine antifreeze by the color of the coolant in the expansion tank. Green-blue indicates FORD SUPER PLUS 4 antifreeze, and red indicates FORD SUPER PLUS 2000. If the coolant in the expansion tank is brown (mixed antifreeze green-blue and red), it will cause severe engine damage. See also chapter "Coolant" us. 38.
The following tool is required for testing: A densimeter, which is inexpensively available from motorcycle supply stores and is also often offered for use at petrol stations.
For safety reasons, the concentration of antifreeze in the coolant of the cooling system must be checked regularly before the onset of winter, especially if intermediate replenishments of the system with clean water have taken place.
Warm up the engine until the upper coolant supply hose to the radiator feels warm to the touch.
Open the cover of the expansion tank.
Suck in the coolant with a densimeter and determine its density by the position of the float. In our latitudes, the concentration of antifreeze should prevent freezing of the coolant to a temperature of -26°C, and in areas with an extremely cold climate - to a temperature of -40°C.
Adding antifreeze
Warning: Use only FORD approved antifreeze, either FORD SUPER PLUS 4 or FORD SUPER PLUS 2000.
Close the cap on the expansion tank and, after a test drive, recheck the concentration of antifreeze in the coolant.
