No special tool is required to do the job.

The following wear parts must be purchased as replacements: Fuel filter for the respective engine. When buying, indicate the year of manufacture and model of the car.

Diesel engine

Water removal / fuel filter replacement

A suitable container is required to drain the water from the filter.

Attention: Leaking diesel fuel must be wiped off immediately, especially from rubber parts (cooling system hoses), otherwise, over time, the rubber parts are destroyed.

Water removal

Place a suitable container under drain plug -arrow-.

Loosen the drain plug and drain approximately 100 cm3 of the liquid into a container placed underneath. At the end of the drain, only clean diesel fuel should flow out.

If no fluid comes out after releasing the plug, loosen the bleed plug at the fuel outlet pipe -C-, see figure F-6277 below.

Tighten the water drain plug.

If released, tighten the air bleed plug.

After draining the water filter, it is necessary to remove air from the power supply system.

Filter replacement

Place a suitable container under the fuel filter.

Detach the inlet -B- and outlet -C- fuel lines from the filter holder and fix them as high as possible so that less fuel is spilled. A - fuel filter mounting nuts.

Loosen the fuel filter mount.

Fill the new filter to the brim with clean diesel fuel.

Insert new gaskets, a new filter element and tighten the filter mount.

Remove container from under fuel filter.

Remove air from the supply system.

After a test drive, check the tightness of the power supply system.

Removal of air from the power system

Attention: Since 9/94 it is necessary to bleed air from the supply system (Bosch filter), see p. 74.

Place a suitable container under the fuel filter.

Loosen the air bleed plug at the fuel inlet pipe.

Loosen the fastening of the fuel pump handle at the filter holder.

Operate the priming pump and add fuel until it comes out of the bleeder plug without air bubbles.

Tighten the air bleed plug while pressing the fuel priming pump handle.

Turn on the engine preheating system and then start the engine.

If the engine does not start, loosen the union nuts of the high pressure fuel lines at the first and second cylinders. Turn the engine crankshaft with the starter until fuel comes out from under the union nuts. When the engine is running, tighten the union nuts of the fuel lines» torque 20 Nm.

Remove container from under fuel filter.

Injection petrol engines

When the fuel filter is removed, a large amount of fuel may leak out, which requires a petrol-resistant container to collect.

Withdrawal

Attention: No open flame, fire hazard!

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Attention. Read instructions from the chapter "Removing and installing the battery".

Raise the car from behind on the goats.

Place a suitable container under the filter to collect the fuel.

Cover the fuel line connections with rags and slowly loosen the banjo bolts of the inlet -C- and outlet -A-fuel lines to relieve fuel pressure. After the pressure in the fuel lines has dropped, unscrew the hollow bolts.

Loosen securing bolt -B- and remove filter.

Installation

Attach the fuel filter and tighten the mounting bolt.

Connect the inlet and outlet fuel hoses to the filter each with two new seals and tighten them.

Connect ground wire (-) battery.

If available, set the clock and enter the radio's anti-theft code.

Lower the car.

After a test drive, check the tightness of the power system connections.
