Models up to 8/93
Note: for models from 9/93, the idle speed is controlled by the electronic control unit and does not need manual adjustment.
Warm up the engine to operating temperature so that the temperature of the engine oil is at least +80°C.
Shut off the engine and, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, connect a device for measuring the crankshaft speed. Since diesel engines do not have an ignition system, a special device is required to measure the crankshaft speed.
Turn off all electrical consumers (radio, lighting, etc.) and air conditioning system.
Start the engine and leave it to idle. Tighten the handbrake.
Checking the maximum speed
Ask an assistant to press the accelerator pedal to the position at which the maximum engine speed is reached.
Attention: Do not hold the accelerator pedal in this position for more than five seconds. The maximum speed should be 4800±50 1/min.
Attention: If the maximum speed of the crankshaft is not reached, it is necessary to contact a service station to adjust it.
Checking idle speed and lag time
Set the maximum crankshaft speed.
Release the accelerator pedal and measure the time during which the idle speed is reached. Prescribed value: less than five seconds.
Measure the idle speed of the crankshaft. Prescribed value with DPC injection pump: 775±25 1/min; in the presence of high pressure fuel pump DPCR: 875±25 1/min.
Idle speed control
To adjust the idling speed, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting bolt -arrow- to the correct value. After setting the correct speed value, lock the adjusting screw again.
Delay time adjustment
If the lag time is set incorrectly, then the idling speed is first adjusted, and then the lag time.
Detach the throttle link from the injection pump lever.
Install the FORD 23-016 adjusting gauge on the idle speed adjustment bolt. If there is no gauge, clamp a 3 mm feeler gauge or drill between the injection pump lever and the adjusting bolt.
Start the engine and read the speed value. Prescribed value: 900±30 1/min.
By turning the adjusting bolt, set the prescribed idling speed. After setting the correct speed value, lock the adjusting screw again.
Attach the throttle link to the injection pump lever.
Check again and, if necessary, adjust the idle speed.
