Replacing valve stem seals (diesel engine)

Withdrawal

Remove cylinder head cover.

Loosen the rocker arm pin.

Set the piston of the corresponding cylinder to TDC. To do this, first turn the crankshaft to the TDC position for the piston of cylinder 1.

At the same time as the piston of cylinder 1, the piston of cylinder 4 is also at TDC. Mark the bottom of the V-belt pulley located on the crankshaft with chalk. Then turn the crankshaft 1/2 turn (180°), to move the label up. In this case, the pistons of cylinders 2 and 3 will be at TDC.

Loosen the fit of crackers in the undercuts of the valve stems with light blows of a rubber hammer on the upper plate of the valve springs.

Attach, as shown in the figure, the special tool FORD 21-024 and 21-024-03/04 and compress the valve springs.

Attention: When pressing the spring plate to remove the cotters, do not damage the valve stem. If the stem is damaged, the valve must be replaced. because a damaged rod wears out quickly.

Remove the crackers, release the valve spring.

Remove the upper and lower spring plates and valve spring.

Attention: Do not turn the crankshaft with the valve springs removed. Oil seals for each pair of cylinders (1 and 4, 2 and 3) always replace as a set, and before turning the crankshaft by 180°, reinstall the springs with spring plates. If you turn the crankshaft with the springs removed, the valves will fall into the combustion chamber and the cylinder head will have to be removed.

Pry off the oil seal with a screwdriver.

Attention. Remove valve stem seals carefully so as not to damage their seats.

Installation

In order not to damage the valve stem seals, glue the undercut for crackers in the valve stem with adhesive tape.

Push a new lubricated valve stem seal onto the valve guide by hand.

Remove adhesive film.

Insert the lower and upper spring plates together with the spring and compress the spring.

Insert crackers and release the spring.

Replace other valve stem seals in the same way.

Attach the axis of the rocker arms, while making sure that the spherical tips of the pusher rods are included in the rocker arms.

Engine up to 8/94 tighten the rocker arm axle nuts to 55 Nm and the bolts to 20 Nm.

Engine from 9/94. turn the crankshaft from the position corresponding to the TDC for the piston of cylinder 1, turn by 20°. Lubricate the nuts -arrows- for the rocker shafts with gear oil and tighten to 27 Nm. Attention: Before turning the engine crankshaft, pause for at least 15 minutes so that the hydraulic tappets can settle. Otherwise, the valves may collide with portions.

Engine up to B / 94: adjust the clearances in the valve drive, see p. 26.

Install the cylinder head cover.
