Removal and installation of the electric fuel pump

            0

Attention: No open flames, prepare a fire extinguisher and strictly follow the safety regulations when working on fuel supply systems, see p. 54.

Carbureted engine

The electric fuel pump is located under the bottom of the luggage compartment to the left of the fuel tank. By design, this is an eccentric slide gate (lamellar) pump.

Withdrawal

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Attention. Disconnecting the battery erases the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".

Put the car on the goats.

Clean the pump and holder from the outside.

Place a fuel-resistant container under the pump.

Clamp the fuel supply line -B- with a screw clamp to prevent fuel from escaping from the tank.

Caution: Do not damage the fuel line when doing this.

Release the clamp and disconnect the fuel supply line -B- from the fuel pump. Plug the fuel line with a clean bolt of the correct diameter.

Loosen clamp and disconnect fuel return line -C- from fuel pump. Plug the fuel line with a clean bolt of the correct diameter.

Disconnect multi-pin connector -D-.

Unscrew the retaining bolt -A- and remove the pump.

Installation

* Clean fuel line connections and electrical connector.

Insert the fuel pump into the holder and tighten the mounting bolt.

Attention: Check the correct position of the rubber seal. The pump must not be in direct contact with the holder.

Remove the plugs from the fuel lines and connect the fuel lines to the pump. Check the reliability of the connections and secure the fuel lines with clamps.

Remove the screw clamp from the fuel supply line.

Connect the multi-pin connector.

Lower the car.

Connect ground wire to battery (-).

If available, set the clock and enter the anti-theft code for the radio.

Start the engine and check the tightness of the connection between the fuel lines and the pump.

ONS and V6 engines with injection system up to 8/94

The electric fuel pump is located under the bottom of the luggage compartment to the left of the fuel tank. By design, this is a vane pump with working bodies in the form of rollers.

Withdrawal

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Caution: Disconnecting the battery will erase the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".

Put the car on the goats.

Clean the pump and holder from the outside.

Place a fuel-resistant container under the pump.

Clamp the fuel supply line with a screw clamp or clamp to prevent fuel from leaking out of the tank.

Caution: Do not damage the fuel line when doing this.

Release the clamp and disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel pump. Plug the fuel line with a clean bolt of the correct diameter.

Cover fuel return line -arrow- with a cloth. Carefully loosen the fuel return line and release the fuel pressure. Remove fuel return line completely.

Mark electrical wires with adhesive tape and unplug connectors.

Unscrew the mounting bolt of the holder and remove the pump.

Installation

Clean fuel line connections and electrical connectors.

Insert the fuel pump into the holder and tighten the mounting bolt.

Attention: Check the correct position of the rubber seal. The pump must not be in direct contact with the holder.

Remove the plug from the fuel supply line and connect the fuel line to the pump. Check the connection and secure the fuel line with a clamp.

Attach fuel return line with two new seals and tighten down.

Remove the clamp from the fuel supply line.

Connect the plug connectors according to the markings.

Lower the car.

Connect ground wire to battery (-).

If available, set the clock and enter the anti-theft code for the radio.

Start the engine and check the tightness of the connection between the fuel lines and the pump.

DOHC engines with injection system

The electric fuel pump, together with the fuel level sensor, is located on a holder in the fuel tank.

Withdrawal

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Caution: Disconnecting the battery will erase the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".

Remove the holder of the fuel level sensor and the fuel pump, see p. 54.

The fuel pump -B- may only be replaced together with the fuel gauge sender -A-.

Installation

Install the fuel level sensor and fuel pump holder with a new seal, see p. 54.

Connect ground wire to battery (-).

If available, set the clock and enter the anti-theft code for the radio.
