The gearbox is removed downwards. Therefore, a car lift or inspection hole is required to remove and install the gearbox, in addition, a garage jack with a wooden stand is needed.

Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.

Caution: Disconnecting the battery will erase the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".

Unscrew the fastening to the damper of the coupling screwed to the cardan shaft with rubber elastic elements.

Attention: Do not unscrew the fastening of the coupling to the cardan shaft.

If the damper is made with splined studs, when releasing the fastening nuts, hold the studs with a standard slotted socket wrench.

Remove the cardan shaft as an assembly.

Gearbox N: Remove propshaft from gearbox extension.

Attention: To prevent oil from leaking out of the gearbox, insert a plug into the hole in the gearbox.

Support the gearbox through the wooden frame with a garage jack.

Remove bolts -A- securing gearbox cross member to body. Unscrew bolt -B- securing crosshead to gearbox.

If fitted, unscrew earth jumper -C- of radio interference suppression system.

Carefully lower the garage jack and check if any part of the engine is touching the front wall, if necessary, support the engine from the front wall side with a block of wood.

Remove bolts -C- for gearshift console -A-. Detach the gear selector rod from the hinge -B-.

To hold the shift console in the installation position, secure it with a welding electrode clamped in the transmission tunnel.

Disconnect multi-pin connectors -A- for reversing light switch and -B- for speed sensor.

Models up to 8/94: detach the clutch cable from the gearbox, see p. 86.

Models from 9/94: Disconnect the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder at the gearbox. To do this, remove the locking clip from the fitting and disconnect the pipeline. Unscrew earth wire -arrow-.

Caution: Clean up spilled brake fluid with a rag. Observe safety regulations when handling brake fluid see p. 117.

Unscrew the bolts securing the intermediate plate at the gearbox housing and remove the plate (DOHC engine; 1 bolt; V6 engine, 1 bolt with nut, diesel engine 3 bolts).

Remove all engine and gearbox flange bolts and remove them together with the electrical wire holder, heat shield and coolant line (DOHC engine: 10 bolts; V6 engine: 6 bolts; diesel engine: 3 bolts).

MT-75 gearbox: support the gearbox with a garage jack.

The gearbox is easy to lift and press with a mount from the engine crankcase.
