Steering gear — removal and installation

Warning: If suspension or steering fasteners are lost or unscrewed, they must be replaced with new ones, do not reuse them. Fasteners are replaced with new ones of the same design, quality and marking.


1. Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.

2. Turn the ignition key to position "included" to unlock the steering wheel.

3. Remove the left part of the subdashboard.

4. Remove the three nuts securing the steering column cover from inside the firewall. Pull the cover back to gain access to the intermediate shaft.

5. Mark the intermediate shaft connecting the steering gear and the steering column shaft as follows. so that during subsequent assembly they take the same relative position (section 24). Remove intermediate shaft.

6. Remove the heat shield from the subframe. Disconnect the power and return lines from the steering gear and drain the fluid.

7. Loosen nuts on both front wheels. Raise the vehicle and place it on stands. Apply the parking brake and remove the front wheels.

8. Disconnect the ends of the tie rods from the steering knuckle arms. See section 30.

9. From under the subframe, unscrew the two bolts of the steering gear nuts (see picture).

10. Push the steering box up until the support bolts are out of the holes, then rotate it forward so the input shaft is out of the hole in the firewall.

11. Carefully remove the steering gear from the recess on the left side of the wheel.

12. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Be sure to tighten the fasteners to the correct torque. Bleed the power steering system as recommended in section 29.
