Engine cooling system
The Tauras and Sable models are equipped with a forced circulation engine cooling system; it is controlled by a cooling switch mounted on the thermostat housing. Coolant is forced through the engine by a water pump mounted at the front of the block and driven by the crankshaft through a drive belt. The coolant flows around each of the cylinders and enters the rear of the engine. Molded channels direct coolant around the intake and exhaust manifolds, fresh ignition and exhaust valve guides.
The thermostat is located in the back of the case (from the driver's side). During heating, a closed thermostat prevents the circulation of coolant through the radiator. When the engine temperature approaches operating values, the thermostat opens and the coolant begins to pass through the radiator, where it cools before returning to the engine. The radiator has a horizontal arrangement of tubes, plates and tubes are made of aluminum and covered with bronze. End tanks are nylon. The support brackets for the radiator and fan shroud are made together with the tanks. The radiator is not serviceable due to its design features.
On automatic transmission engines, a two-speed fan is installed, and on four-cylinder manual transmission engines, a single-speed electric motor is connected to the fan shroud at the rear of the radiator.
Heating system
The heating system consists of a blower fan and heater core mounted inside the dashboard, heating hoses connect the heater core to the engine cooling system and the heater/air-cooling control unit mounted on the dash.
Hot coolant from the engine constantly circulates through the heater core. After turning on the heater, the damper opens to allow heat to enter the passenger compartment. The fan switch on the control panel turns on the blower motor, which blows air through the heater core.
Air conditioning system
Warning: a number of 1992 models are equipped with R134 type air conditioning, which can be identified by yellow labels marked "NON - CFC" on parts and on the compressor clutch of golden color. Although the external elements of this system are similar to those in systems such as R12 (used on earlier models), but they are not interchangeable.
The air conditioning system consists of a condenser mounted in front of the radiator, an evaporator inside the heating and air conditioning ducts mounted inside the dashboard, a compressor on the engine (filter drier) on the fire barrier together with a high pressure check valve and a tin base connecting all the elements.
The blower fan blows warmer cabin air into the evaporator (a kind of reverse-acting radiator) transferring heat from the air to the coolant. The coolant boils into low-pressure steam, while simultaneously taking heat from the evaporator outlet.
