General information

Emission control systems include:
  • electronic engine control system (EEC - IV)
  • waste gas re-burning system (EGR)
  • manifold air intake control system
  • fuel vapor control system
  • effective crankcase ventilation system (PCV)
  • intake air temperature control system (for four-cylinder engine)
  • catalytic converter

All these systems are directly or indirectly linked to the EEC - IV system.

The sections in this chapter include descriptions, inspection procedures, and replacement operations (where possible) for each of the above systems.

Note: The most common cause of this equipment failure is a loose or torn vacuum hose or wire, so always check piping and wire connections first.

The drawings of the various systems may not exactly match the system installed in your vehicle due to the fact that the manufacturer makes various changes to the vehicle modifications from year to year.

Vehicle emission control information label located in the engine compartment (see picture). It contains important data on emission standardization and adjustment information, along with a diagram of the location of the vacuum hoses with the identification of system components.
